The Michigan Health Endowment Fund is seeking a full-time Fellow to support the program team with all aspects of the Fund’s grantmaking programs including research, grant administration and evaluation. This is a two-year position that will run Summer 2017-Summer 2019.
Fellowship Description and Duties:
Research and Communications
- Research and conduct literature reviews on specific topics of interest to the Fund’s team.
- Draft white papers and other documents necessary to develop a resource library for grantees on specific topics.
- Research other health-related funders to understand their funding strategies and identify best practices.
- Assist with storytelling (e.g. blogs) about grantee organizations, projects and other health-related topics.
- Monitor news, blogs, e-newsletters, and other sources of information related to the Fund’s strategic focus areas.
- Work in partnership with the Senior Fellow and evaluators to develop a high level assessment of our effectiveness on impacting health and addressing our cross cutting goals.
- Assist in identifying mini cluster evaluations for responsive grants. Review previous grants to help find potential shared measures for evaluation.
- Develop grantee surveys for evaluation, trainings, convenings and other topics as appropriate.
- Provide analyses and reports to monitor current grantees and to inform future grantmaking.
- Identify overlaps across all of the Fund’s grantmaking and potential topics for convenings based on these findings.
- Collaboratively evaluate, develop and help operationalize improvement strategies to improve grantmaking and grant administration processes.
- Compile subject matter expert feedback and draft grantee questions (when appropriate).
- Serve as a secondary reviewer for grant proposals and concept papers.
- Provide staff support for the Council of Michigan Foundation’s affinity groups.
- Coordinate grantee and other meetings as requested.
- Provide additional administrative and program support as necessary
Qualifications and/or Skills Desired:
The ideal candidate will have/demonstrate:
- A passion for the Fund’s work and strong interest in the philanthropic/nonprofit sector.
- A master’s degree is required.
- Previous internship or work experience.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Track record of adaptability, personal accountability and initiative. Capacity to deal with concepts and complexity comfortably.
- Organizational skills, paying strict attention to detail and deadlines.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Works well individually and as part of a team.
- Ability to identify, collect, organize and synthesize information from a variety of data sources.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and other technology.

The Michigan Health Endowment Fund is seeking a professional communicator with marketing and digital skills to join our team as communications associate. Reporting to the communications officer, this individual will play a critical support role and have the opportunity to help shape a communications program for a relatively new organization. The ideal candidate balances a passion and knack for storytelling with the technical skills to produce quality content and measure progress across several platforms.
- Content creation and publishing
- Written: web content, blog, social media, media outreach, and other assignments as needed
- Visual and multimedia: photography, video, infographics, visual aids, presentations, etc.
- Communications data collection and analysis
- Track social and web analytics; report on progress toward goals and provide insight into most effective tactics for audience growth
- Monitor earned media and make recommendations for increased coverage
- Support across communications activities
- Produce materials for programs, events, etc., working with vendors as necessary
- Help plan new communications initiatives
- As part of a small staff, assist with some administrative and customer service duties
Key skills and qualifications
- The ideal candidate is a superb writer across genres and formats: long-form, blogging, social media, formal and informal, etc. Precise and tactful editing skills are required.
- You should know your way around Microsoft Word and WordPress, and be able to use Adobe Creative Suites for at least the basics. Experience with Salesforce or Mailchimp is a bonus.
- Experience or demonstrated interest in public health is a plus, but is not required. More importantly, the right person learns new issue areas quickly, can write about anything, and is a passionate and productive digital communicator.
- We’re looking for someone with social media savvy. Experience with social media campaigns, audience development, and evaluation will be an asset.
- Direct public relations experience, like drafting press releases and reaching out to reporters, is a plus.
- The right individual has a bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of experience. We might consider an entry-level candidate who has demonstrated excellence in the areas above through internships, visible work products, and/or an online presence.
- Must have a sense of humor.
